The Power of Positive Affirmations

Our mind and our thoughts create our reality. In our day to day life we are bombarded with thousands of thoughts. Most sub-conscious and a minority conscious thoughts. You may have heard people say something along the lines of, “If you say/think something enough you will start to believe it”, well we think that statement is incredibly true. This is the power of positive affirmations!

What are positive affirmations?

“Affirmations are positive statements that describe a desired situation, habit or goal. These positive statements are usually short sentences, and are repeated often, for the purpose of impressing them on the subconscious mind and triggering it into action, to bring the desired situation, habit or goal into fruition.” (Success Consciousness).

When we consciously place good/positive thoughts into our minds, our reality will change.

This can also work in the opposite way, if we’re constantly thinking negative thoughts and putting negative affirmations into our minds then we will perceive our reality as negative.

For example, “Today is going to suck, I can’t be bothered” compared to, “I’m going to have a great day, I’m so excited and motivated.” You can see there’s a big shift in not only the tone of both sentences but their intention and how they make your body and mind feel.

It’s just like if we feed our bodies with bad food, we’re most likely not going to feel the best, it works the same way with our mind.

Positive affirmations can be used in any way, in any situation and at any time in our life/day. To combat stress, to change a behaviour or pattern, relationships etc.

For example: In one study, a short affirmation exercise boosted the problem-solving abilities of “chronically stressed” subjects to the same level as those with low stress.

What’s more, affirmations have been used to successfully treat people with low self-esteem, depression, and other mental health conditions.

How can you start using positive affirmations in your life?

As mentioned above, positive affirmations can be used for pretty much anything! Maybe you want to have a more positive mind frame, feel anxious/stressed or maybe you want to attract a certain thing into your life. The possibilities are truly endless, and you really have nothing to lose!

Begin your positive affirmation with “I AM” instead of “I will” or “I’ll try”. “I AM” affirms that you already are or have what you desire.

For example: A positive affirmation for happiness could be,” I am extremely happy and content with my life”.

You can simply write it down on a piece of paper, stick it on our mirror so you can see it every day. Or maybe write it in your phone so you can read it wherever you are. Whatever works for you!

Other beliefs may be limiting your ability to create the very things you say you want. What you want and what you believe you deserve may be very different. You need to pay attention to your thoughts so that you can begin to eliminate the ones creating experiences you do not want in your life.” – Louise Hay

Here are a few points to make your affirmations as powerful as possible:

1) Start with the words “I am.” These are the two most powerful words in the English language.

2) Use the present tense.

3) State it in the positive.

4) Keep it brief.

5) Make it specific.

6) Include an action word.

7) Include at least one dynamic emotion or feeling word.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of how powerful our thoughts and our minds are!
