Our Favourite Alternatives for Reducing Plastic Waste

Once upon a time plastic alternatives were deemed to be expensive and few & far between. But with the current plastic pollution epidemic being a very real & scary threat to our environment (not to mention plastic being bad for our health), it’s great to see more businesses are making the switch and bring out some exciting and affordable eco-friendly products! Here are some of our favourites…

Disposable Party Plates

Bringing out the fine china isn’t always convenient, especially when you’re hosting large events or going outdoors. Luckily, EcoSouLife have developed some super affordable bio-disposables made from naturally derived materials to rival those flimsy, ugly and toxic plastic plates. And better yet, they are biodegradable so you can take them home and pop them in the compost bin. Perfect!

Drinking Straws

With only a little extra time and effort needed to clean stainless steel straws, they are the perfect alternative to the unnecessary and wasteful plastic throw-aways. Consider how much landfill we could save each year if we all switched to stainless steel.

Toothbrushes

Speaking of landfill… Did you know that Australians discard around 30 million toothbrushes each year adding 1000 tonnes of plastic to landfill? These sustainably made, biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes are a great alternative.

Travel Coffee Cups

Now by no means would we ask you to give up coffee! Even though more cafes are switching to biodegradable cups, unfortunately the plastic lids are clogging up landfill and making their way to our oceans. A better option? EcoSouLife’s Travel Mugs which last for a few years and are biodegradable after use. Some cafe’s even offer an incentive for BYO cups!

Chopping Boards

There are some excellent new materials being produced to create toxic free plastic alternatives to the smelly old chopping boards! But one of our favourites is Neoflam’s Bamboo Cutting Board. Made with renewable, environmentally bamboo, it’s naturally anti-bacterial and even has some smart non-slip TPE edges.

Household Cleaning & Body Brushes

Eco Max brushes are environmentally friendly, biodegradable and entirely handmade. Using Fair Trade principles all of the components use natural unbleached materials, such as Alistonia timber and sisal or waste products, such as the coco fibre from coconut husks, and rubberwood – a waste product from rubber production. Even the sealant used on the timber is a non-toxic toy paint sealer so it’s animal and child-friendly and the wire is galvanised so it won’t rust.

Disposable Nappies

An excellent Australian, family owned business that’s doing wonders for our environment at the moment is ecoriginals Baby! Their range of affordable disposable nappies feature biodegradable & compostable ingredients and are safe & free from harmful chemicals & fragrances. The packaging is even 100% compostable. How good is that!?

Mason Jars

More recently synonymous with the word “hipster”, these guys are so versatile we don’t know where to start. Great for whole foods pantry storage (glass is free from harsh chemicals that can leach into your food & drink), work lunch containers, drink glasses, or even a funky flower jar! The possibilities are endless.

Laundry Wash Balls

Besides the amount of money saved, the amount of chemicals saved from being released into the environment, and the amount water saved (no more need for a rinse cycle) – laundry wash balls are excellent because you won’t need to buy plastic laundry bottles ever again! Plus without the need to use any harsh chemicals and toxins, this is a much healthier alternative for you and your family.

Yoga Mats

Some yoga mats include lots of toxins and chemicals, which are clearly no good for your health – or your senses whilst nose down performing the downward dog, for that matter! Opt for these biodegradable mats, free from PVC, latex and rubber, instead.

By making these small conscious changes, we will be handing over a healthier planet to our children!

All of these products, including the entire EcoSouLife, ecoriginals Baby, Neoflam and Eco Max range are available in store.
