What Is Coconut Oil Exactly?

Known around the world as the fruit of life, coconuts are cold pressed to extract the oil. Coconut oil, just like olive oil and other oil variants, is edible oil that is composed primarily of saturated fat. We hear you… How can something that contains more than 90% saturated fat be healthy?

The secret lies under the microscope. Coconut oil is rich in medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) – acids perfect for improving overall health.

Coconut Oil can be stored for long periods of time and it’s the perfect household commodity. There are two types of coconut oil – refined coconut oil and unrefined coconut oil.

Refined Coconut Oil

Filtered to cleanse any natural impurities, refined coconut oil is made primarily from dried coconut. It has a generally bland taste and actually does not smell anything like coconut. Refined coconut oil scores high in its nutritional value, though it pales in comparison to its unrefined counterpart.

Unrefined Coconut Oil

Or better yet, virgin coconut oil. Yes, these terms are exactly the same. There’s a good reason why it’s called “virgin.” Free from chemicals, unrefined coconut oil is extracted from raw coconut. Thus, its natural coconut smell and flavor are retained. And because no chemicals were included in its extraction, unrefined coconut oil is considered the overall better product.

How Is Coconut Oil Made?

We won’t dig too deep into the scientific details of producing coconut oil, as we can entrust this to our manufacturers, however it does make sense to know at least a little about how it is extracted, formulated and distributed. Dried coconuts are placed in a variety of processes; some undergo centrifuge treatments, while others go through cold pressed and expeller pressed treatments.

Remember we have done all the hard work before even stocking it on our shelves. We have checked for the oils’ colour, aroma and price. We have also chosen an oil that is clear as any light color may mean that the oil was not extracted to industry standard. As for taste, unrefined coconut oil must still have that coconut flavor, but it should not be too much. In addition, if it tastes like it was smoked or burned, that is a sign that most nutrients may have been removed by its extraction process (which defeats the purpose as to why we would use coconut oil in the first place).

Conversely, refined coconut oil should have the most neutral and bland flavor.

What Are Coconut Oil’s Benefits?

As you’re about to discover, coconut oil has A TON of health benefits, and we’re not even exaggerating. Yes, this simple edible oil has a lot of oomph in it.

  1. Weight Control – Yes yes yes! Coconut oil has proven weight loss benefits. Diets containing MCFA make people feel fuller, compared to meals with LCFAs. The less you eat, the fewer calories you need to burn to begin losing weight.
  2. Cholesterol Control – Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which helps battle excess cholesterol levels. Thus, it is beneficial to stop eating those trans fat rich food items and cook your food in coconut oil instead.
  3. Bye Bye Acne – Virgin coconut oil just may be the saving grace for people suffering from acne and pimples! It naturally fights bacteria known to cause skin imperfections. The oil may be applied directly to the affected area, or consumed with food. Moreover, coconut oil keeps the skin hydrated, which helps the skin look and stay younger.
  4. Fight Alzheimer’s – Another breakthrough health benefit of using coconut oil is it helps neurons stay alive and functioning properly, thereby slowing down the disease. This might be the long awaited answer for our beloved elderly.
  5. Antioxidant of Choice – Coconut oil is one of the best forms of antioxidant for people of all ages. Phenolic compounds in coconut oil assist the body in releasing toxins.

Alright, So How Do We Use It?

The question now stands: how do we use coconut oil so we can reap its many benefits? You may not be aware yet but you may already be using coconut oil in your daily routine. Here’s how:

  1. Eat with it – Whether for cooking your family’s favorite meats, baking yummy cakes and pastries, having an add on for luscious desserts, or munching on delectable chocolates, a dose of coconut oil makes your food indulgences far more enticing.
